FD 27: the question is not whether it beats Football Manager, it is that it plays a different position
You are not on the bench, you are in the office. A real design idea that settles the trade-off between simplicity and depth.

Bid in secret, steal your neighbour's card, then turn your hand into a slap. A card game built to end in an argument.

One last game. It is the phrase we said a thousand times in front of WoW, LoL or StarCraft, generally around one in the morning, and it invariably ended at four on one more defeat with an alarm about to ring far too soon.
So calling your game One Last Hand is either humour or a threat. Having played it, we lean toward the second.

Studio Fire Brick Games announces a card game inspired by poker, then immediately clarifies that this is definitely not poker night. They are right, and the difference lies in a phase poker does not have.
Here, cards are not dealt to you. Before the fight begins, everyone secretly bids for the cards they want. You spend wisely, you bluff, or, and this is where it turns nasty, you bid purely to stop your friend completing their hand. On a tie, the dice decide who celebrates and who complains.
That is an excellent find, because it moves the tension to before the game even starts. In poker you are dealt a hand and then lie about it. Here you fight to build it first, and every card an opponent wins is a card you did not get. The grudges therefore begin at the deal.
The second phase is more direct: your hand becomes your attack, your backup hand handles defence. Pairs, straights and flushes are no longer scores, they are damage.
That is where the pleasure you mentioned sits, and the studio owns it completely, talking plainly about turning your combo into a slap they will remember. Converting a poker hand into physical assault is a stupid idea, and that is exactly why it works: you are not winning chips, you are doing something to someone you know.
Add Relics and power-ups that bend the rules. You change card values, shift suits, build dubious combinations, survive one more round, or ruin someone's perfect plan right before they start celebrating. The studio sums up the philosophy in a question and its answer: is it cheating? Maybe. Is it allowed? Absolutely.

The game plays two to six online in private lobbies, and the studio does not hide what it is selling. Its welcome promise fits on one line: enter as friends, leave as enemies.
Everyone also picks an ego, a ridiculous legend with something to prove. Some were rich, some were feared, some were noble, and some probably should have stopped playing a long time ago. We recognise ourselves.
And the studio slips in the sharpest observation on its whole page: there will always be someone insisting the game is unfair, but only from the moment they start losing.
This score comes from our own playthroughs, the game having just launched. It rewards the secret bidding phase, which is the real design idea and what separates this from the mass of online card games, along with a perfectly held tone.
It accounts for total dependence on the group. This is a party game: without four people available at the same time and willing to resent each other for an hour, there is not much left. And like every game with relics, it will have to prove its balance holds once the community finds the most abusive combinations.
Good point, it is available in French.
So tell us, and be honest: what time does your personal record for one last game actually sit at?
