Wild West Miner Simulator: I already have a job, thanks, I was not looking for five more

Mine, smelt, build, repeat. Gathering here is a chore with no playful payoff, and the same publisher produces this by the yard.

Verdict

Disappointing

We finally understand why it never clicked. This game's problem is not its setting, nor its production, it is that it offers no pleasure mechanic in exchange for the work it demands. Mine, smelt, haul, sell, repeat. That is the programme, and it resembles a working day rather closely.

The pitch, which is not the problem

Credit where it is due, studio Digital Melody has a rather funny hook. You become the mayor of a town that does not exist: nobody lives there, it is the governor's idea of a joke. It falls to you to turn this nowhere into a metropolis.

The programme follows: dig for coal, iron, copper, gold and diamonds, find oil in deep deposits, install smelting furnaces and extraction machines, build houses to attract residents, expand infrastructure, decorate your home, and upgrade your tools from travelling merchants. Crates and wheelbarrows optimise logistics.

On paper, that is a perfectly standard progression loop. The problem lies elsewhere.

What is missing, and it is central

In a good gathering game, extraction is never the objective, it is fuel for something else. In the best of them that something is automation: you dig so that you no longer have to dig. In others it is construction, discovery, or outside pressure giving stakes to every minute spent underground.

Here, that something is nowhere to be seen. Gathering feeds construction, which unlocks better tools, which let you gather faster. The loop closes on itself without ever changing nature, and the player stays manual from beginning to end. That is precisely what you describe: you are not being offered a game, you are being offered a post.

Nothing obliges a trade game to be a chore, and many escape it by offering a moment of reversal, the point where machines take over and the pleasure becomes optimisation. Without that reversal, only repetition remains.

The production context, which explains a lot

The game is published by PlayWay, with Digital Melody developing. That is the same publisher as Low-Budget Repairs, released the same day, and the Polish house that industrialised the trade simulator.

We have written it before and it applies again: that model produces a great many titles built on the same foundations and the same task-completion logic. When the formula is backed by a good writing idea, like the handyman who profits by botching, it works. When there is only the task, only the task remains.

The score, and what it is worth

The game is out today with no user reviews. The score above is therefore our assessment, not a player consensus, and it penalises the absence of any playful payoff for the effort demanded rather than a technical fault.

It is available in French, and it will doubtless find its audience: there are players for whom quiet repetition is exactly the rest they want after a working day, and there is nothing wrong with that. Simply, if you are looking for a reason to dig other than digging, it is not here.
