A free-to-play Division spin-off landing on Steam. I sank hundreds of hours into the first two, so let us just say I am watching this one closely.

Some announcements you just do not see coming. The Division Resurgence arriving as a native Steam release, with cross-play, is one of those for me. Because I am one of those people who sank hundreds of hours into the first The Division, then the second. The loot, the dark zones, the "just one slightly better item" loop, all of it held me far longer than I will ever admit out loud. So of course I am watching this Resurgence closely.
A useful reminder: this is not The Division 3. It is a free-to-play spin-off developed by Ubisoft, born on mobile, now settling onto PC via Steam with a proper native port and cross-platform play. It stays in the same universe, the same post-pandemic New York, the same cover-based looter shooter, but in a formula built to be free and playable anywhere.
The idea of getting the loop that hooked me back for free, with hundreds of missions and an open map, is obviously tempting. On paper, everything I loved is there: the tactical firefights, the agent you fuss over, the gear you optimize piece by piece. And the fact that it is native on Steam rather than a limp mobile port changes a lot about the comfort of playing.
Now, I will not play naive. "Free-to-play" and "born on mobile" are two flags that call for caution. The real question, the one I will only answer with a controller in hand, is the monetization. Does progression respect the player, or does it gently nudge you toward the store? Does the endgame hold up over time without reaching for a credit card? The franchise has seen both virtuous economies and pushier ones, and everything will hinge on that.
So I am holding my verdict, which is the point of a preview. But the desire is there, intact. I am going to create an agent, go clean up New York again, and see if the loot magic still works.
