We thought we had seen it all with Marvel vs Capcom and its teams of two or three heroes. Arc System Works, the undisputed master of the modern fighting game, decides to step it up, and not by a little: in MARVEL Tokon Fighting Souls, you no longer play two or three, but four against four. That escalation changes everything, and combined with ArcSys's craft, it could well give birth to the Marvel versus we have been waiting years for. Suffice to say we cannot sit still.

The context

MARVEL Tokon Fighting Souls is developed by Arc System Works, the studio behind Guilty Gear and DNF Duel, expected on PS5, PS4 and PC via Steam on 6 August 2026. It is a 2.5D team fighting game, where you face your opponent in tag battles with an ensemble of heroes and villains from the Marvel universe. The game draws liberally on the legacy of Marvel vs Capcom, with its assists, tags, launchers and long combos, but adds its own identity. The launch roster counts twenty characters split across five teams of four, a generous cast that immediately lays the foundations of a great versus.

What we know

The big novelty, and the heart of the bet, is the move to 4v4. Where Marvel vs Capcom was played with two or three characters, Tokon fields teams of four, which multiplies the possibilities of combos, tags and synergies. But the real find, the one that radically sets the game apart from its elders, is the single shared life bar: your four characters draw from one common health pool, and when it is empty, the whole team falls. Gone is the system where each hero has their own bar: here, every exchange counts for the entire team, which completely reshuffles the strategy and resource management.

The rest breathes Arc System Works's craft. The game blends assists, tags and launchers in the grand tradition of the Marvel versus, with spectacular air combos and cinematic Ultimate Skills for each character. Above all, ArcSys has integrated both traditional commands and simplified inputs, exactly as in its recent productions, so beginners can have fun immediately while leaving experts the depth needed for high-level competition. That dual approach, accessible and demanding at once, is the studio's trademark, and it is perfectly at home here in a game aiming at the mainstream as much as the competitive scene.

The roster, finally, makes fans salivate. Twenty characters split across five teams, the Unbreakable X-Men, the Amazing Guardians, the Fighting Avengers, the Knights of Doom and the Samurai Outriders, with marquee names like Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Storm, Magneto, Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider. You are not locked into these groups: as soon as you build your own team of four, the game generates a custom name based on your point character. Enough to experiment with synergies endlessly.

What worries us

The first point of caution is precisely that single life bar. The idea is brilliant on paper, but it is also divisive: it changes the combat economy so profoundly that it could disorient Marvel-versus veterans used to sacrificing one character to save another. Everything will depend on the balance, because a poorly calibrated shared-health system can make comebacks impossible or, conversely, combos too punishing. We will have to see controller in hand whether this find keeps its promise of freshness or frustrates more than it enriches.

The second point of caution is the balance of such a large roster and the competitive longevity. Twenty characters of very different styles, in a team fighting game, is a balancing nightmare, and even a studio as experienced as Arc System Works will have to ensure rigorous support for the game to live on the competitive scene. A versus's success is measured over years, through its balance, its netcode and its community support, all unknowns no trailer can lift before release.

Are we waiting for it or not?

MARVEL Tokon Fighting Souls has everything to become the great Marvel versus of this generation. The move to 4v4, the shared life bar that renews the strategy, the generous roster of twenty heroes, the owned legacy of Marvel vs Capcom and above all Arc System Works's craft make up an extremely exciting cocktail. For fighting game fans and Marvel lovers, it is clearly one of the most anticipated titles of the year.

But we keep in mind the unknowns: the single life bar will have to prove it enriches rather than frustrates, and the balance of a twenty-character roster will have to hold over competitive time. Everything will hinge on these fine tunings, impossible to assess before spending hours controller in hand. So we are waiting for 6 August, ready to build our dream team and chain air combos, to decide. If ArcSys keeps the promise of its ambition, we could well have the ultimate Marvel versus here. See you at launch.
