Scam Line: excellent, provided you arrive with six friends and an even number

The 1.0 of a seven-euro manipulation game. Its biggest flaw is not in the game, it is in your contacts list.

Scam Line's best review is also its shortest, and it contains the entire game.

"10/10 if you want to develop trust issues, lose your friends, and question every decision you've ever made."

The author took the trouble to credit his fellow players with their specialities: the pathological liar, the gaslighter, and the third one, too innocent for this game.

I do not have a great deal to add about the atmosphere.

Scam Line, a call

How it works

Four to eight players. You telephone each other in pairs and face challenges that demand cooperation or betrayal depending on your role at that moment.

Become a liar, a manipulator, a cheater, or find your own path to victory. The store page's phrasing is deliberately vague, and for once that is accurate: the game does not assign you a side, it puts you in a situation and watches you decide.

What separates it from the great social deduction classics is that telephone. In Among Us or in werewolf, everybody hears everybody, and the lie is public. Here the conversations are private and paired. You are not lying in front of a group, you are lying to a person, knowing they will go and repeat what you said.

That changes the nature of the manipulation. It is no longer about seeming credible before a tribunal, but about choosing which version to give to whom, and keeping the books on your own lies. It is more intimate, dirtier and considerably more effective.

The structural flaw, flagged by everybody

You need an even number of players.

Calls happen in pairs. At five or seven, somebody is systematically left without a partner, waiting for the others to finish. Two experienced players report it in identical terms, one of them with twelve hours logged: make sure you have an even number, or the odd person out waits around unable to call anyone.

This is not a bug, it is a direct consequence of the design, and it is the sort of thing fixed by a design idea rather than a patch. A listener role, a solo challenge in the meantime, anything that occupies the odd one out.

Scam Line, a challenge

And the flaw that weighs even heavier

There is no public matchmaking.

Which is to say you must supply your own six to eight people. The game will not find them for you.

That is complaint number one, and one player phrased it with amused clarity: most of the negative reviews are people saying the game is good but they have nobody to play it with. Another explains he managed to organise a single session, unable to gather enough people at the same time.

It is worth being honest about what that implies. Scam Line is not a game you buy. It is a game you organise. It requires an evening arranged in advance with six available people, which is a social budget many adults no longer hold.

If you have a standing group that meets regularly, this game will settle into your rotation and it is well worth its price. If you were planning to click play at ten on a Tuesday night, you will be looking at an empty menu.

What the 1.0 brings, and what it still owes

The game left early access on 3 November, with 84 per cent positive from over 1,100 reviews accumulated during that period.

The most insistent request is unanimous: more challenges. The format lives on the variety of its situations, and a regular group exhausts the catalogue faster than the studio refills it. Several positive reviews are explicitly conditional, along the lines of "if they keep adding mini games this will be a top seller".

That is the right way to read this game: its current content is enough for a few memorable evenings, not for a six-month habit. What follows depends on the update cadence.

One player separately reports very high graphics card utilisation across widely varied hardware, from a GTX 1050 to an RTX 5070. I pass that on as a player observation rather than a diagnosis: an unbounded frame rate produces exactly that symptom, and it is the kind of setting a 1.0 ought to expose.

Scam Line, the lobby

Seven euros, six friends

6.99 euros, 5.59 during the launch window. At sandwich prices, it is one of the better laughs-per-euro ratios going, on the single condition that you have the group.

One player sums up the typical evening better than any product page: it kept him and his friends entertained for three hours, on a very simple formula with a lot of potential.

Three hours of methodical betrayal among people who like each other, for the price of a coffee and a half. I will take it.

Just plan for the even number. And plan on trusting nobody for a few days.

Scam Line, the endgame

Two people short of a full table? We recruit fairly regularly on the InsertCoins Discord, at the risk of introducing you to bad company.
