Ariokan may rest on the card game's familiar codes, but its creative freedom can quickly disorient beginners: between the eight Factions, the Gods, the Legends and the card editor, you no longer know where to start. Yet a good Ariokan player isn't the one who stacks powerful cards, but the one who builds a coherent deck around a clear identity. This guide gives you the keys to start right, build your first deck, choose your God and exploit the card editor without getting lost. For our full opinion, head to the Ariokan review.

Ariokan, a card game whose creative freedom demands understanding the basics well

How do Ariokan's basics work?

Before building anything, master the match loop. Ariokan rests on Mana management, your resource for deploying your cards. You play Minions, which hold the field and attack, and Spells, which produce one-off effects. The goal is twofold: reduce the opponent's Life Points to zero, or force them to exhaust their deck. Keeping these two win conditions in mind already orients your strategy, between direct aggression and wearing down the opponent's resources.

Two elements give the game its flavor. The God, first, is your deck's leader: it grants passive bonuses to all the cards of its Faction, and so it's around it that your identity is built. Legends, next, are powerful units you can only summon by completing mini-quests during the match. They reward play geared toward precise objectives, and knowing how to unlock them at the right moment can turn a game. Understanding the interplay between Mana, Minions, Spells, the God and the Legends is the bedrock of any good deck, and it's what you should absorb before diving into creation.

How do you choose your God and Faction?

The choice of God is your deck's founding decision, because it defines its identity and Faction. Since the God grants passive bonuses to all the cards of its Faction, the golden rule is coherence: build a deck mostly made of cards from your God's Faction, to fully benefit from its bonuses. A deck scattered across several Factions dilutes the God's advantage and deprives itself of its main strength. So first choose a God whose style appeals to you, then make your deck converge toward its Faction.

To start, favor a God with a clear identity and a legible game plan, rather than one with subtle effects that demand fine mastery. Think about how you want to win: through fast aggression with lots of Minions, through control with Spells that manage the opponent's field, or through objective-oriented play to summon your Legends. Your God and Faction should serve that plan. Once that identity is set, every added card should answer a simple question: does it serve my game plan and benefit from my God's bonus? If the answer is no, it probably has no place in the deck.

How do you exploit the card editor?

The card editor is the heart of Ariokan's originality, and using it well can give your deck a decisive edge. It lets you combine the effects and keywords of the eight Factions to create balanced cards unique to your strategy. The system's great strength is that the editor automatically balances your creations before adding them to the shared library: you therefore can't craft an overtly broken card, which frees you to focus on synergy rather than raw power.

The right approach isn't to seek the strongest card possible, but the one that fills a gap in your deck or strengthens its synergy. Ask yourself what your game plan lacks: an answer to a type of threat, an accelerator to summon your Legends faster, an effect that extends a combo. It's by creating cards tailored to your strategy, not generic bombs, that you'll get the best from the editor. Combine keywords from different Factions sparingly and with intent, always keeping coherence with your God in mind. A well-thought-out homemade card, perfectly slotting into your plan, is infinitely better than a pile of unconnected effects. The editor rewards architects, not collectors.

How do you progress in the roguelite mode?

Beyond the online competitive side, Ariokan offers a roguelite mode that makes an excellent gateway, especially for learning. The principle: you choose a God before setting off, you modify your deck along the way, and you collect relics that add new effects. Completing adventures gives you rewards, levels up the chosen God and unlocks more content. It's the ideal ground to experiment without the pressure of the ranking.

Our advice for this mode: use it as a lab. It's the perfect place to test different Gods, understand each Faction's synergies and hone your editor creations before facing real opponents online. The relics, which modify your run's rules, encourage adaptation: don't cling to a fixed plan, grab the relics that strengthen your synergy and pivot if an opportunity arises. Leveling up your God and unlocking content will give you a better understanding of its strengths, which you can then exploit in competitive play. In short, the roguelite mode is your best teacher before throwing yourself into the online deep end.
