Star Wars: Galactic Racer: the beginner's guide to not blowing your ride up

The ramjet, the heat, the planets that change your thermals, and the golden rule of parts: never build wide.

Galactic Racer explains very badly the one thing it needed to explain: its heat.

Most people who quit in the first two hours are not driving badly. They use the ramjet like a normal boost, they explode, and they conclude the game is cheating.

Here is what you needed to know.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the ramjet in action

Your two boosts are not two boosts

This is the foundation, and everything else follows from it.

The afterburner. Moderate power, a supply that refills on its own, its own cooldown, deployable as soon as it is available. No risk. It is your everyday tool: corner exits, short overtakes, recovering from a mistake.

The ramjet. Far more powerful. It only becomes available once you are already going fast enough, so it will never save you from a bad start or a wall. It is switched off manually, and that is the whole problem: until you let go, it heats. Let the heat climb all the way and your vehicle explodes.

The beginner's rule: the ramjet goes on in the straights and comes off before the corner entry, not during it.

Two reasons. First because your hands will be busy in the bend and that is exactly when you forget to release. Second because accumulated heat does not vanish instantly: it follows you into the next corner, and it is the second straight that kills you, not the first.

Heat depends on the planet

Here is the mechanic nobody sees coming and that changes your whole approach.

The circuit's climate modifies your thermals.

Jakku is hot. The ramjet is markedly more dangerous there. Short chains, frequent cut-offs. It is the planet you win by being disciplined, not by being fast.

Ando Prime is cold. You can hold the ramjet much longer. It is the circuit where you can afford the long chains, and where you will claw back the time you lost elsewhere.

On Lantaana, water cools you. Going through water is therefore not purely a speed loss to avoid, it is sometimes a reset of your gauge. Learn to use it as a deliberate cooling point.

Prepare before the acid planet. This is advice circulating among multiplayer tour players, and it is simple: put points into resilience before you get there. Your ride's durability matters more than your top speed.

The habit to build: look at the planet before choosing your build, not the other way round. A good build on Jakku is a bad build on Ando Prime.

The golden rule of parts: build narrow

This is the most important advice in this guide, and the one everybody ignores on their first run.

Galactic Racer's parts are not percentages to stack. They are buffs, debuffs, status effects and conditional triggers.

The direct consequence: a build that does a bit of everything does nothing. The combinations that work are the ones that pick an axis and commit to it entirely.

The example I find most instructive, and which is already circulating among players, deserves spelling out because it teaches you to think the way the game does.

There is an ability, Supercooled Vent, which inflicts the Frozen state on your own vehicle. Read like that, it is a debuff you refuse. Except that, frozen, you can use the ramjet without generating heat. You have just removed the game's only limit.

Then you pay the bill: you stack freeze resistance and frost protection parts to cancel the downsides of your own debuff.

Remember the reasoning more than the example: find the part that breaks a rule, then buy everything that offsets the price. That is the heart of building in this game.

How to spend your credits

After each event you spend your credits on a random selection of improvements and parts.

Three principles for not wasting a run.

1. Do not buy the most expensive part, buy the one that speaks to your axis. An average part that completes your combination beats an excellent isolated one.

2. Upgrade your two boosts separately, and unequally. They upgrade independently. If your style is built on short bursts, raise the afterburner. If you are aiming for long chains, raise the ramjet and everything touching heat dissipation.

3. Keep some resilience. You are in a game where rivals ram you deliberately. A fast, fragile ride loses its races in the scenery, not on the stopwatch. Survival counts as much as lap time.

Choosing your vehicle class

Four families, with genuinely different physics.

Landspeeder. The all-rounder. Start here. It forgives, it absorbs, and it lets you learn the thermals without also managing twitchy handling.

Speeder bike. Speed and agility traded against durability. Thrilling, and exactly the wrong choice for your first hours in a game where people drive into you.

Skim speeder. Specialised in surface-hugging. Take it once you know the layouts.

Podracer. The extreme end of the speed-versus-control trade, faithful to the licence. Sebulba tells you so himself in-game: he will not let you near the podracer without a lot of practice. Listen to him, for once that he is giving good advice.

Combat: slam, shunt, take down

This is not a game of pure racing lines, it is a contact game. People coming from traditional racers take an hour to accept that and become much better afterwards.

You gain ground by making others lose it. A rival put into the scenery is a rival who is not coming back, and the game rewards taking the risk.

But look behind you. The same thing happens to you. In a tight corner, whoever brakes first is whoever gets shoved.

The three first-evening mistakes

1. Using the ramjet like an afterburner. You will explode. Several times. It is not a bug.

2. Trying to win every race. The campaign is run-based, and it deliberately puts you in events you are not meant to win. That is only clear afterwards, and it is the main source of frustration for new players. Play for the run's progression, not for a podium every time.

3. Spreading your credits. A bit everywhere equals nowhere. Pick an axis by the second event and hold it.

Two things to know before launching

These are not tips, they are warnings that save an unpleasant surprise.

There is no keyboard rebinding in the launch build. If you need a custom layout, plan for a controller, for which basic rebinds do exist.

Cutscenes cannot be skipped. In a structure where you restart runs, prepare to hear the same dialogue again before reaching your purchases.

The summary in eight lines

  1. The afterburner is the everyday tool, the ramjet is the risky one.
  2. The ramjet goes on in the straights and comes off before the corner.
  3. Heat lingers: it is the second straight that kills you.
  4. Jakku heats, Ando Prime cools, Lantaana gives you water.
  5. Put points into resilience before the acid planet.
  6. Build narrow: find the part that breaks a rule, then pay its price.
  7. Upgrade your two boosts separately, according to your style.
  8. Start on a landspeeder, save the podracer for later.

For everything else, our full review explains why this game is far less Episode I Racer and far more Burnout than you think.
