A year of early access, and one line from the studio the day before release that sums up the ambition: the oceans have receded, it is time to explore.

That is not a metaphor. It is the central mechanic.

Endless Legend 2, the ocean world

A world that changes shape

Endless Legend 2 takes place on an ocean world at the brink of extinction, upended by cataclysms.

And the world changes as time goes on, revealing new opportunities for exploration and conquest to the bold.

That is the most interesting variation the series has brought to the 4X formula. In a conventional strategy game the map is a settled fact: you uncover it, then you exploit it. Here the territory itself is a variable. A position that is unassailable today can become a crossroads in fifteen turns, and a safe coastline can find itself exposed.

In other words, long-term planning has to absorb geographic uncertainty, which is new and genuinely stimulating.

Factions that are not playing the same game

That has been Amplitude's signature since the first Endless Legend, and they keep leaning on it.

The studio claims wildly varied factions, each with its own philosophy, history, capabilities and narrative.

The examples set the tone. A faction that profits from a constant state of fighting, untethered by the need to justify its wars, spawning additional warriors with each victory. Another that lives on cohabitation and cooperation, spreading influence by building a network of allies among the planet's minor factions. A third that feeds upon its own kind, with an economy free from the needs of mere mortals.

These are not percentage bonuses, they are different ways of playing the same game, and that is what gives the series its replayability.

Version 1.0 adds one final faction: the Sandshapers, ancient inhabitants of Saiadha who remember a time before the oceans, whose desert cities were swept away by the great floods and who now seek to restore their former glory.

Endless Legend 2, a tactical battle

The structure

The rest is solid 4X: you establish expansive cities to spread influence and strengthen your economy, you raise armies, you fight turn-based tactical battles, and you push into the unknown to uncover the secrets at the planet's core.

Tactical battles separated from the strategic map remain the house signature, and it is still what separates Amplitude from its competitors: you do not resolve a fight with a dice roll, you play it.

What 1.0 means

The game has been in early access since 22 September 2025 and shows 2,036 positive reviews out of 2,450, roughly 83 per cent.

The studio announced that, for release, it fixed every bug with more than five upvotes on its community feedback platform. That is a way of measuring the work I find healthy, and precise enough to be verifiable.

They add, with appropriate caution, that release is an important milestone in a game's life rather than an ending.

At 49.99 euros it is the price of an ambitious 4X published by Hooded Horse, and the early access rating is solid without being triumphant.

My main reservation concerns the inheritance. The first Endless Legend remains, for many, one of the best 4X games ever made, and its sequel has to exist beside a ghost. A world that changes shape is an ambitious answer to that problem, and the real measure will come in a few months, once players have worn out every faction.
