If you were looking for a summer job unlike any other, here is one: receptionist in a hotel located at the crossroads of worlds, with strange creatures for guests and the mission of surviving your probationary period. Hotel Tales blends management, investigation and narrative into a cocktail as original as it is endearing, one that does not always keep all its promises but charms with its atmosphere and its generosity.

Hotel Tales, the mystery hotel at the crossroads of worlds and its strange guests

The context

Hotel Tales is developed and published by TopHouse Studio, available on PC via Steam on 31 July 2026. It is a mystery hotel management game where you dive into the amazing, frightening and funny stories of your guests and colleagues, discover the establishment's secrets, and try to last at least to the end of your probationary period. The game owns a bold genre blend, between visual novel, simulation, dark fantasy, hidden object, investigation, RPG and romance. That hybridity is both its greatest strength and its main source of fragility.

The gameplay

The heart of the game is the articulation between management and narrative. You manage the hotel's daily life, respond to guest requests, ranging from cooking a unique dish to finding lost items or even guests lost in the rooms, and resolve conflicts between guests or employees, knowing that every decision affects the characters' attitude toward you and each other. That relationship-management dimension is the game's real engine: it is not just a hotel to run, it is a small society of singular beings whose sensitivities you have to handle.

The narrative layer gives the game its personality and its depth. You develop relationships with your colleagues, from friendship to romance, each character having their own story that depends on your choices, and the game offers different endings depending on how you carry out your duties, your relationships and your key decisions at certain moments. That branching structure rewards investment and makes you want to discover the many facets of this unusual hotel. The crossroads-of-worlds atmosphere, both unsettling and warm, wraps the whole in a singular charm that gives the experience its zest.

Hotel Tales, managing requests and conflicts between guests and employees

The game's limits flow directly from its hybridity. By blending so many genres, visual novel, management, investigation, hidden object, romance, Hotel Tales risks dispersion, and not all its components have the same depth or the same success. Some parts, like pure management or the hidden-object phases, stay in the background compared to the richness of the narrative, and the whole sometimes lacks sharpness in its identity. You sense a generous game that embraces a lot, at the risk of not mastering everything perfectly.

The other reservation concerns pace and accessibility. The genre blend and the density of systems demand time to adjust, and the game does not always clearly guide the player between its many facets. It is the price of a sprawling ambition for a modest-sized studio, and it narrows the pleasure to those willing to let themselves be carried by the atmosphere without demanding flawless execution of every component. For those who play along, the experience nonetheless stays gripping and original.

The tech

Technically, Hotel Tales cares for its atmosphere, which is the glue of its hybrid identity. The art direction effectively sets the crossroads-of-worlds world, at once strange and welcoming, and the staging of the guests' and colleagues' stories carries the narrative dimension with real charm. It is that singular atmosphere that gives coherence to a whole that could, without it, seem disjointed.

The technical reservations join the hybridity question. The legibility between the different game phases would benefit from being clearer, and the interface, which has to juggle many systems, takes learning. But the whole runs correctly and serves its narrative ambition, without betraying immersion through major technical flaws. For an independent production this ambitious in its genre blend, the coherence of the atmosphere is a success that compensates for the imperfections.

Hotel Tales, the relationships with colleagues and the multiple possible endings

The verdict

Hotel Tales is an endearing, original game, carried by a strong idea, running a hotel at the crossroads of worlds, and by a singular atmosphere that blends strangeness and warmth. Its narrative dimension, with its characters of branching stories, its relationships to cultivate and its multiple endings, is its greatest success, and generously rewards the player's investment. It is the kind of virtual summer job you do not forget.

Its limits lie in its very hybridity: by embracing so many genres, the game sometimes lacks sharpness and mastery over some of its components, and its pace demands indulgence. But in its register, that of the generous narrative game with a strong atmosphere, Hotel Tales offers a gripping, charming experience, to reserve for those who favour atmosphere and story over mechanical perfection. An imperfect but unforgettable hotel, where you enjoy staying despite the creaks.

An endearing, original blend of management and narrative, whose singular atmosphere makes you forget the imperfections.
