Hydra Heli 2: sinking entire fleets in your slippers, the owned guilty pleasure

An overpowered helicopter, armadas to pulverise and a relaxing five-hour incremental loop. Short, unpretentious, and fiendishly satisfying.

There are evenings when you do not feel like saving the world, running an empire or dodging a thousand projectiles. You just want to sink ships with an absurdly overpowered helicopter, calmly, watching the numbers climb. Hydra Heli 2 is made for exactly those evenings, and there is no shame in admitting it.

Hydra Heli 2, the overpowered helicopter facing an armada

The context

Hydra Heli 2 is developed by ideaspersecond and available on PC via Steam, with a free browser version alongside. It is a relaxing incremental game about sinking battleships with a completely overpowered helicopter. You command swarms of devastating weapons, annihilate armadas, collect shards and use the Depot to boost your damage and unlock new regions. A direct sequel to Hydra Heli, it takes the formula and fleshes it out, around a new threat to the nation of Rotondra, the Island Legion.

The gameplay

The heart of the game is the incremental loop in its clearest form: destroy, collect, upgrade, destroy harder. You pilot an experimental helicopter that pours swarms of weapons onto enemy fleets, each destruction yields shards, and those shards fund upgrades that increase firepower, which lets you sink bigger targets, and so on. It is the self-feeding progress mechanic, that little dopamine hit at every tier crossed, and Hydra Heli 2 executes it with a clarity and rhythm that make the progression immediately legible and satisfying.

What sets the game apart from the mass of incrementals is its finite, bounded nature. Where many games in the genre stretch on infinitely to the point of nausea, Hydra Heli 2 offers a relaxing experience of about five hours, with two helicopters to master, three bosses to fell and nine regions to discover. This measured length is a real quality: the game has a beginning, a middle and an end, it does not try to retain you through predatory mechanics, and you come out feeling you completed something rather than being sucked into a bottomless pit. It is an incremental that respects your time.

Hydra Heli 2, the Depot and the power upgrades

The Depot, the nerve centre of upgrades, structures the power growth with enough choice to give a sense of progression without drowning the player in complexity. Unlocking a new region, discovering a more imposing fleet, tuning your build to cross a stubborn tier, that is the loop that carries the five hours by without you noticing them fly. The three bosses punctuate the adventure with welcome intensity spikes that break the routine of collecting.

The limits are the owned ones of the genre and the scale. The game is short and deliberately simple, without the strategic depth of a more ambitious incremental, and its loop, relaxing as it is, remains repetitive by nature: that is the very principle of the hypnotic pleasure it provides, but it reserves it for fans of that particular relaxation. Those looking for a stiff challenge or mechanical richness will pass. Hydra Heli 2 does not claim to be anything other than a well-calibrated guilty pleasure, and that is precisely its success.

The tech

Technically, Hydra Heli 2 owns a simple, effective presentation in service of its loop. The action is legible, the fleet destructions deliver the small satisfying spectacle you expect, and the Depot interface clearly shows the upgrades and their effect, which is essential in a game where optimisation is the heart of the pleasure. The fact that it also exists as a browser version underlines its accessible, unpretentious nature.

The technical reservations are on the scale of the project, that is, minimal. A bit more visual variety between the nine regions would have reinforced the sense of journey, but the whole runs perfectly, without friction, which is exactly what you ask of a game designed for relaxation. Smoothness comes first, and it is there.

Hydra Heli 2, a new region unlocked and its enemy fleet

The verdict

Hydra Heli 2 succeeds at what it sets out to do with refreshing modesty: offering a relaxing, legible and satisfying incremental loop, without ever trying to trap the player. Sinking armadas with an overpowered helicopter, watching the numbers climb and completing a well-paced five-hour adventure, that is a simple and honest pleasure, elevated by a measured length that sets it apart from the genre's bottomless pits.

Its limits, its short length and its simplicity, are inseparable from its nature, and are only flaws if you expected something else. For what it is, a well-calibrated guilty pleasure to savour in your slippers, Hydra Heli 2 fulfils its contract efficiently. If the idea of calmly pulverising fleets on a tired evening speaks to you, hop aboard without hesitation. You already know exactly what you came for, and the game gives it to you.

A short, relaxing and honest incremental that respects your time as much as it sinks fleets.
