A co-op mining roguelite where the real question is whether your friends will let you grab the loot. Bullet hell, biomes, and great tension.

Nothing tests a friendship like a pile of precious ore and a collapsing mine. MineGeon Renegades understood this well: beneath its co-op mining shooter looks hides a little theatre of greed, where extracting the loot before the collapse counts as much as deciding whether you share with your friends. Good news: the mechanic is as tense as it is fun.

MineGeon Renegades, mining exploration beneath the planet PAIMO

The context

MineGeon Renegades is developed by Kickstone Studios and available on PC via Steam. It is a sci-fi co-op action game that sends you beneath the surface of the mysterious planet PAIMO, solo or with up to two friends. On the menu: fighting Scavengers, extracting precious resources and uncovering the secrets of a hostile underground world. Released after a slight delay meant to polish the experience based on demo feedback, the game arrives in a more finished state than many of its rushed rivals.

The gameplay

The heart of the game is the dig, fight, extract triptych, with well-conceived tension: every descent is a race against the mine's collapse. You drill through six distinct biomes, grab the loot, and have to get back out alive before everything caves in. This time pressure turns each expedition into a permanent trade-off between greed and caution, that simple but deliciously stressful question: do I push a little further for this vein, or head back up with what I have? That is the crux of the game, and it works.

Combat bets on bullet hell, with a real roguelite customisation layer. You level up to unlock Gadgets that grant upgrades, equip varied weapons to match your style, and choose Ultimates capable of completely upending your approach to combat. Against over twelve bosses and the hordes of Scavengers, composing your build becomes a tactical pleasure that refreshes the descents. The progression makes you want to dive back in to try another combination of weapons, gadgets and ultimate, a classic but effective engine for the genre.

But the true signature of MineGeon Renegades is its both cooperative and competitive dimension. The game encourages you to collaborate to survive, but also slips you the option to break away from the group to maximise your own rewards. This tension between mutual aid and friendly betrayal is a brilliant social spring: sharing the risks but coveting the same vein, helping each other against a boss then fighting over the loot, that is exactly the kind of dynamic that generates memorable evenings with friends. Solo, the game stays solid, but it is in co-op that its personality bursts out.

The limits are those of the genre. The loop, gripping, can become repetitive over time if you chain descents solo, and the bullet hell balance occasionally lets through some abrupt difficulty spikes. The content, generous with its six biomes and dozen bosses, holds the first ten hours well, but it is clearly in a group, where the social dimension takes over, that the replayability truly stretches. A game to recommend controller in hand with friends rather than as a hermit.

The tech

Technically, MineGeon Renegades benefits from its delay to arrive in a polished state. The six biomes offer welcome visual variety, the bullet hell action stays legible despite the density of projectiles, and the drilling as well as the weapons have the weight needed to be satisfying. For a modest studio production, the finish is there and the underground sci-fi atmosphere works.

The technical reservations are minor. Readability can be tested in the busiest fights, especially with several players, and some useful information, like the state of the imminent collapse, would benefit from being flagged more clearly in the heat of the action. Nothing fatal, and the whole runs well, but a bit more clarity in the critical moments would reinforce the intended tension instead of blurring it.

MineGeon Renegades, extracting the loot before the mine collapses

The verdict

MineGeon Renegades manages to give an identity to a familiar formula thanks to its extraction tension and above all its clever balance between cooperation and betrayal. The race against the collapse, the roguelite build customisation and the social dimension of shared or stolen loot make up a gripping, sharp game built for evenings with friends. Its delay paid off, and it arrives more finished than the genre average.

Its limits come from the repetition that looms solo and a few balance spikes. It is a game that shows its full worth with several players, where its friendly rivalry mechanic turns each descent into a little drama. If you are looking for a co-op roguelite to devour with two friends, full of loot to covet and betrayals to forgive, MineGeon Renegades is well worth the descent. Solo, it stays good, but in a group it becomes memorable.

A mining roguelite that makes friendship its finest battlefield, provided you play with others.
