The survivors-like is a crowded genre, where you face tides of enemies stacking upgrades until you become a walking tornado. The Spell Brigade ticks all those boxes, but it adds two ingredients that change everything: co-op for up to four wizards, and above all friendly fire. Yes, in this bullet hell with friends, neither ally nor enemy is safe, and your biggest threat might well be the buddy who misaimed their fireball. That little detail turns a familiar formula into a generator of belly laughs and involuntary betrayals.

The context

The Spell Brigade is an action survivors-like developed by Bolt Blaster Games, available on PC since 29 April 2026. You form a brigade of wizards, solo or in online co-op of one to four players, to slaughter hordes of dark creatures, complete team objectives, unlock upgrades and build overpowered spell synergies. The catch, announced plainly: it's a friendly-fire bullet hell, where your own projectiles can hurt your teammates. The game met with real success, with 86% positive reviews across nearly five thousand responses and a rating of 8.3 out of 10, and it's Steam Deck verified.

The gameplay: spell synergies and co-op chaos

The heart of The Spell Brigade is its depth of spell customization. You can improve, augment and infuse your spells with different elements and upgrades, then combine it all with Enchantments, Quests, Relics and the number of wizards in your squad. That richness opens a vast experimentation ground, where you hunt for the combination that turns a plain spell into a screen-clearing machine. The loop is the tried-and-true survivors one, surviving growing waves while strengthening, but the layer of elemental synergies and infusions gives it real tactical density, far from mere bonus-stacking.

It's in co-op that the game reveals its full flavor, and friendly fire is the key. In a bullet hell where everyone's projectiles can hurt everyone, coordination becomes both vital and hilarious: you learn not to stand in front of a buddy's swarm of spells, you laugh at the miscalibrated fireball that just floored the whole team, you curse the over-enthusiastic wizard. That mechanic, which elsewhere would be a punishment, becomes here an inexhaustible source of joyful chaos and memorable moments. The team objectives reinforce that collective dimension, and adding wizards multiplies both the power and the disorder. It's a game designed for the friend group, and on that ground, it hits the mark.

What sticks

You have to stay honest about the genre's limits. The survivors-like stays a niche pleasure, repetitive by nature, where you do largely the same thing every run, betting on better synergies. Whoever doesn't take to this loop of survival against hordes and this ramp-up to a screen saturated with effects won't change their mind here, despite the spell depth. It's a pleasure of optimization and mastered repetition, owned as such, and you have to love this type of experience to fully enjoy it over time.

The other reservation, paradoxically, is its best asset: friendly fire. Solo, The Spell Brigade loses much of its flavor, because it's the co-op chaos that makes its spice, and the ally-damage mechanic only makes sense with others. Without a crew of friends ready to play the disorder game, the experience shrinks to a solid but more ordinary survivors-like. Like any title designed for co-op, it therefore depends on its social dimension to give its best, and its interest fluctuates with the partners. A constraint to know before diving in solo hoping to live the vaunted chaos.

What we take away

The Spell Brigade is a survivors-like that stands out through two strong ideas: a depth of spell synergies that rewards experimentation, and friendly fire that turns cooperation into gleeful chaos. The ability to infuse and augment your spells with elements, Enchantments and Relics gives real tactical density, while the bullet hell among allies generates belly laughs and involuntary betrayals no solitary survivors could offer. Carried by a very positive reception and a flattering rating, it's a safe bet to liven up an evening among clumsy wizards.

You just have to love the genre and play with company. The survivors loop stays repetitive and niche, reserved for whoever savors optimization against hordes, and friendly fire, its finest find, only takes on its full meaning in co-op. Solo, the game loses its spark and blends into the mass of survivors-likes. But with a crew of friends ready to sacrifice each other on the altar of a misplaced fireball, The Spell Brigade holds a delightful, dense and fiercely convivial proposition. A delight of chaos, provided you have someone to hurt.

Verdict

A co-op survivors-like for up to four wizards, with deep spell synergies and friendly fire that makes the horde as tense as it is hilarious: a delight of chaos, to reserve for playing with friends.

Strengths:

  • A depth of spell synergies that rewards experimentation
  • Friendly fire, which turns co-op into gleeful chaos
  • Team objectives and collective ramp-up
  • A very positive reception and a format perfect on Steam Deck

Weaknesses:

  • A repetitive, niche survivors loop
  • An experience that loses its spice solo, with no friendly fire to exploit
  • A flavor hinging on the quality of your partners
